The Naming of Frisco ISD Schools, by Richard Beaver

Name Selection Process

Frisco ISD selects names for its schools based on input from an advisory committee made up of citizens.

"The Citizens' Committee will assist in building the list of potential names for consideration by the Board Subcommittee for Facility Naming, which will then bring forward recommendations to the full Board of Trustees in regard to naming future FISD facilities," read the district's guidelines.

The current citizen's committee includes former Frisco mayor Bob Warren; Katie Almon (FISD historian); Joni Minett; Betty Venable; and school namesakes Isabel Sem (Sem Elementary), Ruth Borchardt (Borchardt Elementary) and Wilma Fisher (Fisher Elementary).

Selection Criteria

Namesakes are awarded based on several criteria, which are as follows:
  • Schools may be named for former FISD employees whose contributions went above and beyond the normal call of duty;
  • Schools may be named for citizens who served the school district long and well in unpaid or volunteer roles;
  • Schools may be named for public servants who, through their official roles, have greatly contributed to the success of the school system and its young people;
  • Schools may be named for public figures at the local, county, regional, state or national level who have championed the causes of education and/or are excellent role models for youth;
  • Schools may be named for the historical significance of the area where it is built or to honor the traditions and heritage of the community; and
  • Schools may be named for persons who make a significant contribution of money or real property to the FISD.

School Board Subcommittee

The members of the board subcommittee currently are: Trustees Richard Beaver, Buddy Minett and Laura Ellison. Shana McKay-Wortham, Director of Communications, serves as the staff liaison to the subcommittee.
